Oils, waxes and their derivatives are the main base materials of emulsified cosmetics, and play the following roles in emulsified cosmetics.
(1) Moisturizing effect: oils and waxes can give the skin softness, lubrication, elasticity and luster.
(2) Barrier effect: oil and wax substances can form a hydrophobic film on the skin, inhibit the evaporation of skin moisture, prevent the skin from drying and cracking, prevent external stimulation, and protect the skin.
(3) Co-emulsification: Oily substances containing hydroxyl, carboxyl and ester groups, such as higher fatty acids, fatty alcohols, phospholipids, etc., have emulsifying functions and can be used as co-emulsifiers.
(4) Forming effect: Solid grease and wax can increase the thickness of the emulsion and have a forming effect.
Among the above functions, the most basic and most important function is to moisturize the skin, so oils and waxes are also called emollients.

Mainly include oils, waxes, higher fatty acids and fatty alcohols, esters, silicones, synthetic oils and mineral oils.
